William Letts

First Generation

1. WILLIAM1 LETTS was born 1642. William died 1701 at 59 years of age.

He married ELIZABETH LAUD Elizabethtown, Province of East Jersey, September 2, 1667. "Elizabeth was probably a menial servant in Captain (now Governor) Phillip Carteret's household." She was born in 1645 and died in 1685.

"William Letts, a weaver, was brought to Elizabethtown (now in Union County, NJ) from England by Captain Phillip Carteret aboard the good ship 'Phillip' in 1665." William's original house lot contained 7 acres and he later obtained additional land totaling 155 acres.

"Conditions indicate that three incidents happened to William Letts in 1685/86 that changed his life dramatically. First his wife, Elizabeth (Laud) Letts probably died. Second, he married Ann (maiden name unknown); and third he moved to Perth Amboy (Middlesex Co., NJ) soon after it was established under government auspices. His move, in part, must have been prompted by the grudge that some of his neighbors bore against him because he was a witness for the government in the Michell Fence Case." ("Letts Line Extraction" prepared by Les Hazlett from "The Letts Line" by Hubert W. Letts hereafter referred to as "The Letts Line").

On 2 Apr. 1776 Francis Letts was enrolled with other men from Dover Twp., in Captain John Stout's Monmouth County Militia in anticipation of hostile action by the British following the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The County soldiers were generally considered twelve-month men. -------. Francis Letts was appointed Overseer of Highways in March, 1783. In the same year he registered his own cattle brand which led the list in the Dover Town Book at Toms River.

"This area, along with other tidewater areas, from Little Egg Harbor north to Sandy Hook was primitive and would be subjected to continuous harassment from "pine robbers", "free booters" and loyalist pirates (British) for more than two decades to come." ("The Letts Line").

Nehemiah died September 23, 1822 Knox Co., OH, at 58 years of age. His body was interred September, 1822  Mt. Vernon, Ohio, Owl Creek Cemetery. "His grave monument bears his inscription, that of his wife, Rhoda Ann (Reed) Letts, and his wife's mother, Thankful (Honnowell) Reed. The old grave monument with it's inscriptions has been replaced by a descendent, Rachel (Letts) Bell." (A brief history compiled by Rowena Letts Brockway & Cora L. Maricle and published in the Nehemiah Letts Chap. DAR year book for 1910-1911).

Nehemiah served in the military Monmouth Co., NJ, ABT 1777. "Nehemiah Letts was a large boy and looked older than his actual age. This explains why he was able to enlist as a minuteman by the time he was a teenager. Attorney General William S. Stryker's 1872 list of Revolutionary War soldiers does not show the type of service or where Nehemiah served. Presumably he served as a Monmouth County militiaman or minuteman." ("The Letts Line").

Nehemiah immigrated, 1786. Destination: Bedford County, PA. Evidently a number of citizens of Monmouth Co., PA migrated to the Redstone country of PA. Bedford County is now known as Somerset Co. "The Whiskey Rebellion of 1794 occurred in western PA which included Bedford County."

"In 1806 Nehemiah went to Ohio and bought a thousand acres of land in various townships of Licking and Knox Counties. It was not until 1816 that he moved his family, including his mother-in-law, Thankful (Honnowell) Reed, to Knox county, Ohio. In 1817 he reportedly built the first frame dwelling house in Knox County. It is here that he lived until his death ----." ("The Letts Line").

" In this new and wild country, Nehemiah was still a patriot and often answered the call of the sheriff when help was needed to quell disorder, which was not infrequent in the pioneer days of Ohio. He was a man of great size and imposing appearance. He had the reputation of being perfectly fearless in the discharge of all duties, as well as always owning the best horses in the country. He was also a surveyor of considerable note and did much of the land surveying of Knox and Licking counties as the official records of these counties show." (A brief history compiled by Rowena Letts Brockway and Cora L. Maricle and published in the Nehemiah Letts Chap. DAR yearbook for 1910-1911).

After graduation from the University of Iowa, he also took a year of agricultural studies at Iowa State College in Ames.

Jim's occupation: Farmer & Truck Operator Muscatine, IA, 1902 - 1943. He began farming in Louisa Co. with his father until his father's death in 1909. The farm grew to 860 acres, involving Duroc hogs, beef and Holstein dairy cattle and grain. He also produced cottage cheese and butter for shipment to Chicago and shipped Duroc sows as far away as Mexico and South Africa. Jim owned one of the first tractors in the State of Iowa. In 1922, with the failure of the Letts Bank, the "Homestead Farm" was lost.

Moving his family to Muscatine, he was awarded a contract with the H. J. Heinz Co. to raise several hundred acres of tomatoes and horseradish. He also became a owner truck operator and later in his career founded the Iowa Motor Truck Assn.

"Jim Brockway waged a continuous fight for the improvement of Iowa truck laws especially weight provisions and reciprocity. He developed a continually improving mutual understanding between truckers and the various state agencies having control over truck operations. But his especial effort was to achieve unity amongst the operators in Iowa. This ambition was realized in the fall of 1942, when the then existing truck groups united into the Iowa Motor Truck Assn." (Taken from an article in the D. M. Register & Tribune at the time of Grandfather's death).

Jim was elected Louisa County, 1910. Representative of Louisa County to the Iowa State Assembly for the 34th and 35th sessions: He was chairman of the Roads & Highways Committee and joint author of the Balkema-Brockway Bill that created the modern Iowa highway system. The following was written by a friend and colleague in honor of grandfather shortly after his death:

"In Memoriam - James Madison Brockway (1879 - 1943):

- - - - - - - - - - -We have lost a friend: - - - - - - - - - - - - -

'Jim' Brockway was a strong, rugged man - one of Iowa's great athletes; he was a true, loyal friend - one of nature's noblemen; he was a devoted servant of the cause in which he believed - a dauntless fighter; he was a model husband and father - he was a man!

It is symbolic that 'Jim' was joint author of the law that created the great highway system of Iowa. It is a fitting climax to his long fight for unity that he lived to launch the Iowa Motor Truck Association as the representative of the entire industry.

The impact of 'Jim' Brockway upon the times through which he lived so actively and fully, is left in Iowa laws he helped to make, in the lives of his family, and friends which he so constructively influenced, in the betterment of the communities in which he lived; and finally, in the Iowa Motor Truck Association.

The long, courageous, up-hill fight which Jim Brockway made for unity amongst Iowa truckers, leaves his association as a living monument and memorial to our friend Jim.

-Lee H. Forsyth"
